Oh, Tempura! Oh, Morays!

I think ABp Marini is probably trying to stay in His Humblenesses good graces by doing this.

Father,

OK, it took me a moment, as I was thinking at first you were referring to one of the following:

- The high/low altar setup
- His vestments vs. the missal he is using
- His beard (I know this is silly but I was "pulling" by the time I got to this)

But, are you referring to the odd candle arrangement?

Is the gentleman to the left a priest or a deacon? If a deacon, it kind of reminds me of my old parish. In order to give the deacon something to do we would forego the Confiteor so the deacon could pray the Kyrie.

Yvonne, for me it is the candle arrangement which is truly ridiculous. I like balance.

The asymmetrical look is a very particularly Italian thing. Years ago, in addition to my full time position, I served as a chaplain to an Italian orders of religious sisters in my diocese. The altar always had some type of stupid decoration on it and the candles were always to one side….never on either side of the Mensa. I finally showed the nun the liturgical document which says what may and May not be placed on the altar. Her response: “O Padre, that really doesn’t mean anything!” She happily kept doing what she liked.
