I guess the dynamics are really different, but I am a retired Lutheran minister (LCMS) and what always astounds me about such situations is if I ever would have even suggested something like this remodeling there would have been a massive rebellion, likely leading quickly to my transfer to another parish. We did build a lot of suburban churches in the 50’s & 60’s and many of them were done in mid-century modern style, but most of our older churches like this, often neo-gothic, have generally retained their original design, because the people would have never allowed or supported otherwise. Were people back then just bamboozled by the zeitgeist into such wreckovations?

In answer to the question at the end: 1) No one asked the laity what they wanted or thought about the changes; 2) most were so enamored of the clergy that they would go along with just about anything.
That’s how the clergy got by with sexual abuse instead of being strung up in front of their parish church
