It's laudable to stand up for what you believe. Here, it became a losing battle.
Fortunately, he's retirement age. He should just go off and enjoy doing retired person things without administrative worry while being a devoted priest and bishop emeritus if that's his actual canonical status. He's not going to win as he perceives winning to be; he should therefore focus on that which is in his control and put aside that which isn't.
