Father Joseph Smith is my predecessor at St. Anne Church in Richmond Hill. He worked tirelessly in the parish as pastor for 14 years and spearheaded the building of our magnificent new church.
He was mistaken as a priest credibly accused with the same name who died in 1952!
I recruited Fr. Joe into the seminary when I was vocation director in the late 1980's and I was at the Cathedral and he sang in the Cathedral's Men's Choir.

In this day and age, priests like Fr. Smith, who have been falsely accused, exonerated and, then, try to live normally again, are truly picking up their crosses and following our Lord.
I'm surprised no one confused him with the Joseph Smith who founded the Church of Latter Day Saints. You'd think the diocese and the media would expend a bit more effort to distinguish between two priests who have the same name when one of them was credibly accused of horrible conduct.
The diocese provided all the relevant information with a precise identification of who the Father Joseph with crefible allegations was. The problem was the Savannah Morning News did not print the appropriate information.
