MAYBE THE COUNCIL FATHERS WANTED TO REFORM THE PONTIFICAL SOLEMN SUNG MASS?
This aspect of the EF's Pontifical Solemn High Mass needs reform because it simply looks silly. Maybe the bishops who envisioned a sober reform of the liturgies of the Church had this kind of thing in mind, not a wholesale protestantizing of the Church and her liturgies:

How very sad to say this photo is "silly' let met tell you this, I think altar girls, dancing girls, lay lectors, clowns, hand holding, kiss of peace, communion in the hand while standing, polka, rock, mariachi music, giant puppets, during the OF Mass is SILLY! This photo is stunning and holy to look at THE TRUE MASS.
The reason why they are sitting on the steps is because the sanctuary has been 're-ordered' for the Novus Ordo.
What does look silly is a Novus Ordo concelebrated Mass versus populum, with everyone forming a horseshoe shape round a table loaded with silverware (reminiscent of school Speech Day) and extending their arms in what resembles a Nazi salute.
Versus Populum worship looks completely silly. so does all the things mentioned before this....It's really impossible to take such liturgies seriously.
Oh yes John the Novus Ordo concelebrated looks utterly ridiculous and yes like the Nazi salute. That's because it is all about them not The Lord, oh sorry in Sweden one cannot say the Lord or he in their services, the LESBIAN Archbishop of Stockholm has changed their worship books.

We had a Pontifical High Mass for confirmation. The Bishop was super competent in the order of Mass and was even ahead of the priest who was turning the pages. The only thing that appeared a little odd to my eye was how crowded our tiny sanctuary was with everyone present. Not a problem though since our group are pretty well trained and we had a top notch MC.

Actually no. They are following the rubrics for a solemn pontifical Mass. the saber era are sitting where the rubrics call for them to sit. That’s how it was done. A quick google search for retro pics from the pre Vatican II days will show how common practice this was.
This is the custom from the Roman court, and carries much symbolism of the early Church. As a traditional Catholic, this is perfectly normal to me, because I understand the meaning.
I was wondering in the upper picture, why some of the celebrants are wearing green chasubles and those on the sides are wearing yellow and white ones?

It’s amazing how lib “Catholics” live to denigrate tradition and Catholicity. That aside. Use the intellect God gave you. The concelebranys are obviously not wearing the same color chasubles as the main celebrant because they didn’t have enough chasubles in green therefore white is permissible. And of course the priest isn’t wearing a “dress” but the habit of the Franciscans. Nice job rcg mocking the sacred liturgy. I believe the technical term is blasphemy which as you know is profane talk about God, sacred persons, sacred acts or the sacred liturgy. And I think trying to mock a priest, while he is celebrating Holy Mass, while wearing his religious habit and the prescribed sacred vestments, and belittling him as wearing a “dress” qualifies in my book as a profane public act. Nice job.
But, of course, to speak of some element of the liturgy "mockingly" - and I don't think that is what rcg was doing - is BLASPHEMY!
But to speak of another person in a disparaging, condescending, judgmental, and, yes, "mocking" way is - perfectly acceptable.

Dang, Anon at 5:56! The reference to the blue dress was a pop culture reference (and apparently a malapropism) to an aged meme about seeing colors in a digital format. Google “blue or gold dress?”. You are right that the chasubles are not dresses although the maniple looks sort of like a handkerchief.
I guess you did not see the Solemn Pontifical Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in Thanksgiving for the 10th Anniversary of Summorum Pontificum Celebrated by The Most Rev'd Joseph N. Perry, Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Chicago - Cathedral Basilica of SS Peter & Paul, Philadelphia 9/14/17 It was the most beautiful liturgy I have ever seen.

I'm going to take a guess at this. The main celebrant is wearing green for Ordinary Time. The flanking concelebrants are wearing white perhaps because there were not enough green vestments to go around. Out of necessity, concelebrants may wear white while the main celebrant is obliged to follow the norms as laid out in the liturgical books. Last, the 'yellow' that you see is the vestment's gold lining.
rcg - Originally, the maniple was a sort of handkerchief which, over time, has evolved to have several symbolic meanings in addition to assuming the shovel shape that is seen with many Roman style vestments.
