I'll have to admit, I always found this to be an odd practice. Seems strange to sit on the floor so attired.

It's history isn't known to me. Looks oddly practical more than meaningful. The mass stops for preaching, the celebrant removes his maniple, so this should have nothing to do with the liturgy.

Perhaps this was/is a peculiarity of the relevant ceremonials that has outlived its usefulness.

ByzRus,

I have seen altarboys sitting like this but not prelates. There has to be a history surrounding this practice. I will look to see what I can find!

ByzRus,

Here is a reference I found:

Fortescue, O’Connell, Reid says, (p. 114), “… they (the acolytes) may set on the steps of the altar ….)”, citing SRC 2515 para 5.

I also read this practice was very common in England and France. When I was am altarboy, we always had sufficient stools for the altarboys to sit upon even when there were 12-14 of us in the Sanctuary for a Solemn High Mass.

The Book is called: The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described

Nothing comfortable appearing to me, and simply appears a packed, hot, stuffy house where everyone told to be there or be square, and people take that seriously back then, with assorted offices requiring higher ranking folk up front, and not much in the way of seating for anybody sanctuary to narthex.

Bob,

I have been to the Sistine a few times and it pretty tight quarters for this many people

TJM,

Thank you for checking.

Maybe those sitting are part of the Papal Court.

Photo is grainy, hard to see detail.

I have seen post-SC TLM's with servers clustered on the praedella steps.

Bob,

Now here is "social justice" I could support. I expect Pope Merciful will remove the Archbishop of Hartford, Conn for not pushing lefty, "feel good" pablum:

"Archbishop Dexter Burke saw woke politicians gut his city with Marxist nonsense. He also saw two men get murdered near his church one night. He decided to do something.

Burke decided to help form a legally armed "self-defense brigade" to patrol the streets of Hartford's northern neighborhood. It consists of about 40 legally armed citizens who carry guns, wear body cameras, and have drone support in the air."

Burke is actually taking a page from 19th Century Archbishop Hughes of New York City who placed snipers on the roof of St. Patrick's to protect the Church from members of the No Nothing Party. He said he would turn New York into another Moscow if the Church was attacked (he was referring to the Russians burning Moscow when Napoleon invaded).

The American "progressives" and the Vatican will go berserk!

By offices above, I meant both court and those with offices of the mass, and nothing new the step sitting, but only the wondering if the sitting required by confines of Rome rites in ancient quarters, and then percolating down elsewhere elsewhen even if no real need....the world may never know, same as said the narrator to the old owl and TootsiePop commercial.

TJM, the black preacherman defending his turf is both welcome and frightening, as is any overtly armed neighborhood watch, them lacking training for complex situations, and hope and pray they don't get themselves in a jam through excess of enthusiasm and end up paying heavily...a tough enough job even with training and still mistakes are made.

TJM - The Archbishop of Hartford is The Most Rev'd Christopher J. Coyne, installed as the ordinary on 1 May 2024.

Archbishop Dexter Burke is the leader of Walk In The Light Church of God, Inc. I suspect he can mark himself safe from being removed from his office by Pope Francis.

Fr K,

I should have known better - a Catholic Archbishop manly enough to protect his flock. That went out with Vatican II. Great Democratic run city by the way. Cheers!
