ARCHBISHOP SALVATORE CORDILIONE CELEBRATE THE MODERN MISSAL IN AN EXTRAORDINARY WAY

Pontifical Mass of the Americas with Ancient Mass sensibilities. EF Mass promoters need to change their focus and focus on what Archbishop Cordilione offered on Sunday evening. It’s beyond time to seek a legitimate reform in continuity with what preceded:

Magnificent! Look at all the young clergy and attendees!

This was not an average NO Mass. The vestments, the clergy, and the schoola performed magnificently indeed. The choreography was a tad awkward, maybe because the auxiliary staff was too numerous and lacking in coordination. AB Cordelione deserves much praise as I think he is trying his best to defuse a rather difficult situation in a very difficult time for our Church.

I still find a TLM low Mass a more prayerful occasion, more inspirational.

There were awkward moments and too many involved at the altar. Even commenters at Praytell admit the current introductory rite with a myriad of options is a mess. I don’t particular care for a bishop to vest publicly and found it time consuming. I’ve written it before and write it again, I think Sacrosanctum Concilium was more directed to the Pontifical Mass not rank and file parish Masses. But once vested, the rites begged with the magnificent introit the silent prayers at the foot of the altar followed by the Kyrie, Gloria and Collect. The flimsy rubrics for the OF Mass are to blame in some ways.

But with that said, and with the current prohibitions on the EF Mass, bishops who encourage what Archbishop Cordilione modeled is what is needed and that will created an organic renewal in continuity.

I skimmed through this. Despite its clutsy moments, as a "Pontifical Mass" with the vesting rite, it has potential.

As for day-to-day, if the NO as we know it was just celebrated ad orientem, keep it simple without embellishments, that might be the key to success. Reorientation will not occur with complexity. People have to be shown beauty in a relatable way that isn't going to become unduly lengthy. The vesting rite is, to me, perfect for when a bishop visits a parish. It showcases his Office and highlights his visit. This is somewhat common practice in the east as the bishop is welcomed at the rectory and then escorted to the church wearing riassa and mantiya. After the greeting/welcome at the door with cross, bread/salt, he is escorted into the nave to vest for liturgy. Clearly, not business as usual.

The bishop - unmasked and unvaccinated - this will be a superspreader event.

That's the way to do it! In fact it's the Novus Ordo Mass I am fortunate enough to experience most Sundays and have been familiar with for nigh on fifty years. Frank la Rocca's setting shows that modern liturgical music need not be spikily dissonant or tin-pan-alley rubbish.

One point - if, as here, there is a long polyphonic setting of the Kyrie and Gloria, the celebrant and ministers (and for that matter the congregation) should be seated, except when the celebrant intones Gloria in Excelsis Deo. They are listening, not singing.

I agree that the vesting was awkward. Even in the older rite, unless a bishop celebrated from the throne, as opposed to the faldstool, he normally vested in the sacristy.

The fact that the NO can be celebrated in an authentically Catholic manner does not derogate from the case for preserving as a living entity the classic Roman Rite. However, it may prevent people from using the term 'Latin Mass' as applying exclusively to the older form.

GH, yes indeed, evangelization at its best…

Bill Hobbs, you sound a lot like another frequent poster here. BLM and Antifa “mostly peaceful protests” were superspreader events but I suspect those did not bother you one bit. Why politicize this story?

I agree with Fr McDonald and John Nolan here; this is the way to do it in continuity. Just for giggles, I would love to see some brave Priests in the Chicago Archdiocese do this. What could Blaise say? Would be fun to be a fly on the wall.

Now, to the ridiculous altar in front of the altar in the Capella Sistina. Talk about virtue signaling. PLS save that foolishness to the politicians....of wait....

If I were head of the Resurrection Order I would tell the Cardinal that the Order is withdrawing all of its priests from the Chicago Archdiocese.
