SHOULDN'T ALL CARDINALS OPEN THEMSELVES TO AN INVESTIGATION OF THEIR BACKGROUND SO THAT WHEN CARDINAL ELECTORS ELECT A NEW POPE THEY HAVE A SECURITY BACKGROUND CHECK ON EACH CARDINAL? IT IS A HELL OF A GOOD IDEA I THINK!

WHAT IF IN IGNORANCE AND BECAUSE OF A LACK OF BACKGROUND CHECKS, THE CARDINALS IN THE LAST CONCLAVE ELECTED THE ARCHBISHOP AND THEN CARDINAL MCCARRICK AS POPE?

WHAT IF HE HAD BECOME POPE THEODORE THE FIRST IN 2013?????
Former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. (Jersey Journal file photo)

YES, LET'S SUPPORT THIS LAY INITIATIVE TO DO BACKGROUND CHECKS ON EACH AND EVERY CARDINAL WHO COULD BE ELECTED POPE, ESPECIALLY THE UNKNOWN BISHOPS FROM THE PERIPHERY POPE FRANCIS HAS MADE PRINCES OF THE CHURCH.
WHAT KIND OF BACKGROUND CHECK DID POPE FRANCIS INITIATE ON THESE UNKNOWN BISHOPS HE MADE CARDINALS AND WHAT DID THEY DO AS PRIESTS AND BISHOPS UNKNOWN TO US. DID THEY GET DRUNK IN HIGH SCHOOL AND PASS OUT OR FLIRT IN AN INORDINATE WAY WITH BOYS, TEENAGERS AND THE LIKE. WE NEED TO KNOW!

SINCE THE CARDINALS WHO ELECT THE NEXT POPE FROM THEIR OWN NUMBER, WOULDN'T IT BE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT EACH AND EVERY CARDINAL SUBMIT TO A LAW ENFORCEMENT BACKGROUND CHECK SO THAT CARDINALS KNOW WHO THEY ARE ELECTING POPE?

Praise be Jesus Christ! There is a lay group of wealthy Catholics who plan to do background checks on each and every cardinal elector. THIS IS VERY GOOD NEWS INDEED!

I hope that everyone knows that anyone who works for the Church in parishes and in the diocese and especially those who work with children must submit themselves to background checks by investigators.

Why should the cardinals be exempt from this?

Let's support this lay group that CRUX writes about today. Press Crux and read the full article, but here are a few excerpts:

The Red Hat Report, dubbed as the group’s “flagship project,” is designed to audit all 124 current papal electors. Organizers say it will be conducted by a team of, to date, nearly 100 researchers, academics, investigators, and journalists, with the aim “to hold the hierarchy of the Catholic Church accountable for abuse and corruption, and to develop and support honesty, clarity, and fidelity in Church governance.”

In an audio recording obtained by Crux of the event’s launch, Better Church Governance’s Operations Director, Jacob Imam, said the organization was not meant as an attack on Pope Francis, though he asked the crowd of nearly forty attendees: “What if we would have had someone else in 2013 who would have been more proactive in protecting the innocent and the young?”
“Had we had the Red Hat Report, we may not have had Pope Francis,” stated one of the slide presentations accompanying his remarks.
Given the lack of knowledge many electors have about each other, Imam argued, it is an “extremely precarious situation…when the doors of the Sistine Chapel close.”
According to its prospectus, the Better Church Governance Group aims to produce its report before the next papal conclave. The estimated first-year expenditures are listed at $1,126,500.

If the cardinals, bishops, etc actually believed AND practiced what the Church already teaches, we wouldn't even be considering backround checks. Very sad, isn't it?

Jack here...

AMEN— a no-brainer, especially at this point with all we know (and don’t know!).

When a man is being considered for the episcopacy there is an investigation carried out by the Apostolic Nuncio. Letters of inquiry are sent to some number of individuals who are asked to respond to a lengthy list of questions.

I would think that a professional investigation by a secular firm might be better than one run from an "in-house" group of lay men and women. That would, in a sense, give them a freer hand in delving into records. These would have to include ecclesiastical records and files, even those in the so-called "secret" archives of a diocese. "Secret" archives are just personnel records, really, such as all organizations keep on their employees.

First of all, Francis is today what Bergoglio was before. No 2013 cardinal-elector has any excuse for being surprised by anything he has said or done.

Second of all, I sort of agree with Father Kavanaugh, although I do think independent laymen should have some independent role to play in evaluating prospective bishops.

And health check-ups too, so we don't have a repeat of September 1978...

Here is the full description. Thanks, Philip Nielsen

Better Church Governance is an independent watchdog, newly formed to hold the hierarchy of the Catholic Church accountable for abuse and corruption, and to develop and support honesty, clarity, and fidelity in Church governance. Our flagship project is “The Red Hat Report: An Audit of the Cardinal Electors”

The Mission
The College of Cardinals is made up of a large and diverse group of men. Their names, not to mention their actions, are often unknown to faithful Catholics at large and in many cases to each other. Recent developments have produced a dizzying number of reports, documents, and allegations concerning the ‘leaders of the Church.’ Our mission is to assist the public in understanding the characters, records, and priorities of the 124 cardinal electors.

The goal is not simply to record data but to also trace the dynamics of patronage and finance that allow abuse to continue. Our flagship project, The Red Hat Report, provides a survey of the cardinal electors. It is not a political project – and will not endorse or attack any cardinal. It is, fundamentally, a project of the lay faithful, conducted by professional academic researchers in order to promote greater transparency, accountability, and fidelity, and to empower members of the Church to courageously stand up for the truth.

Deliverables
(1) Create The Red Hat Report before the next papal conclave. This report provides a brief introductory dossier for each cardinal, noting their handling of abuse and corruption, both sexual and fiscal, and their theological and pastoral priorities.

(2) Classify the level of evidence for abuse/corruption for each cardinal-elector, based on scores from a variety of categories considered. Such a score promotes a clearer understanding of their record of governance and fidelity.

(3) Communicate this information to the public through social media and the press – including but not limited to editing Wikipedia pages of cardinals.

(4) Publish a website with a summation of evidence of each cardinal’s connection to scandal and abuse for one-stop access.

Our Current Situation
Non-profit status: Currently filing for 501(c)(3) status in Washington D.C.
.
Fundraising: We are working with the non-profit Center for Evangelical Catholicism (CEC), which is acting as our “fiscal sponsor” while we establish non-profit standing and the ability to take direct donations. Unfortunately this report by Crux skewed of few of our project goals based on outdated information. This is because they based some of the article on a leaked early memo I wrote regarding our project goals, rather than our current project goals.

Though substantially similar, members of our project team corrected a few of my early ideas from that memo and we have adjusted our mission accordingly.

In particular there are two revisions that were suggested which we have worked into our mission.

1. Most importantly, we have decided that our fundamental mission should have nothing to do with influencing any conclave. Many of our collaborators have emphasized this point to me since I wrote that memo. I accepted their correction and we have accordingly removed this goal from our project.

2. These same collaborators pointed out to me that it was inappropriate for me to comment, either favorably or unfavorably, on the record of any cardinal. Though the reference to Cardinal Parolin in my memo may indicate my personal bias at the time of writing, they should not be taken as a finding of our report. The comment about Cardinal Parolin, unfortunately, reflects the current difficulty for ordinary Catholic in gaining accurate and balanced information. I regret repeating hasty first impressions, and it is expressly in order to move past such impressions that we wish to commission professional and impartial investigation.

At this point every brother, priest, bishop, cardinal, pope, all nuns and sisters and teachers in Catholic education should have the equivalent of an FBI, CIA investigation. The filth is too wide spread. Use truth serum. Anything. But get rid of them. Why is McCarrick still a priest! Why are those two priests from Miami who were caught by the police in the act of having sex with each other in public, why are they still priests! It’s insanity! Just what level of depravity has to be reached before these freaks are removed from the priesthood. It is torch and pitchfork time!

Anon @ 6:22 pm-

When a man is ordained to the priesthood, an indelible character is impressed into his soul. Once a priest, always a priest. He can have all of his priestly faculties stripped away, but he will always be a priest.

We need to pray for all who have been ordained, because they have been given much, and much will be expected of them.

Under your mantle, O Mother of the Church, O Model of all Christians, your children on earth seek your intercession and implore your mercy. Inspire your sons, the clergy- all deacons, priests, bishops, cardinals, patriarchs, and our Holy Father- to obey your Son and spread His Gospel with firm conviction, loyalty to truth, and unfailing love above all things.
Guide your children, the lay faithful, as they carry the light of Christ to the ends of the Earth: the great halls, the small places, wherever life is lived.
O Mother of Saints, O Refuge of Sinners, lead us home at last to your Church Triumphant where you reign as Queen of Angels and Queen of Heaven. Amen.

Really. Ok, I guess you are the font of all knowledge. You don’t know what I am or am not doing. I may not be able to do much from a worldly perspective but I can pray, FAST, and offer up every tribulation I encounter for the Church and I can talk and talk and talk and talk about what’s going on and inform those in my family and friends and help open their minds. I have helped numerous family and friends come to a different opinion about Francis and his crew. Lots of people have also stopped giving money to these people. Believe me I am not sitting around doing nothing. Every chance I get I prove to people just how corrupt and evil these people are. When people see proof and hear the filth these people are promoting their eyes open. I have helped change the minds of people who are living in adultery and know they are wrong see what’s Francis is doing. Even they don’t want a pope the gives the stamp of approval to sin.

Why would they believe the report if they think everything else they see with their own eyes is wrong? The problem bishops don’t obey their oaths to the hurch and God, why use a report? They could even use it to weed out orthodox men in favor of their agenda. That is a rumor from the last conclave where there are allegations of lobbying.

Oh, I don't claim to know everything. But people who holler about torches and pitchforks and then don't light 'em up and grab their farm implements, expecting others to do the dirty work, sound kinda hollow to me.
