Cardinal Müller confirms sex abuse investigation against UK Cardinal was stopped

October 3, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Cardinal Gerhard Müller has confirmed that the Vatican investigation into sexual abuse by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor was not completed, but instead was stopped for lack of the Pope’s approval.
The cardinal spoke with LifeSiteNews yesterday in Washington, D.C. while there to speak at the Napa Institute’s Conference on Authentic Catholic Reform.
LifeSiteNews asked Cardinal Müller if Pope Francis had indeed halted the investigation into Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor, who passed away in 2017. Müller was until recently the Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), the Vatican body tasked with investigating sex abuse cases. Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor was accused of abusing a girl when she was 13 or 14 during the 1960s.
Cardinal Müller told LifeSiteNews he was “bound by Pontifical Secret,” but said that “the Pope’s approval is required for investigations” of a Cardinal. LifeSiteNews informed Müller that some news reports were suggesting he had completed the investigation, rather than the investigation having been interrupted and prevented from continuing.
LifeSiteNews asked the cardinal if he would at least go on the record to indicate that the investigation was stopped, rather than completed, and he agreed, “yes.”

Jack here...

To 60’s: At the time of his election, most of us greyhairs had never heard the name Bergoglio, let alone who he was or where he came from. To a person among my Catholic acquantainces the response was “Who?”. Then, being good Catholics, we all tried support the new guy in town whom the Holy Spirit looked upon favorably.
And all of us now wonder what being a “good Catholic” really entails... “Pay, pray and obey”, upon which the Church has historically depended, sure doesn’t cut it.

When I say "greyhairs" I don't necessarily mean you.

I MEAN ALL THE ENTRENCHED LIBERALS WHO WOULD RATHER SEE THE MASS NOT OFFERED AT ALL THAN HAVE A TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS IN THEIR PARISH. I MEAN THE SANDAL-WEARING, POLO-SHIRTED PRIESTS AND HABITLESS NUNS WHO THINK THE ENTIRE MESSAGE OF THE CHURCH IS POLITICAL SOCIAL JUSTICE. I MEAN THE RIDICULOUS GERIATRICS WHO CANNOT LET GO OF WOMEN'S ORDINATION.

You get the idea?

They got their pope. Now they can live with the consequences.

Not a bombshell, more of a damp squib. The allegation was never credible, and although the police investigated it as a matter of routine, interviewing the cardinal back in 2008, they had nothing to go on. PF was probably right to draw a line under this pointless investigation.

A more serious dereliction on CMOC's part was that in 2001 he consecrated as his successor to the see of Arundel and Brighton his former secretary Kieran Conry, despite Conry's affairs with women. Bishop Conry resigned in 2014 when his scandalous conduct was about to be exposed in a national newspaper. Those close to him had known about these dalliances for years, but he had sound liberal credentials and so was given a pass.

And of course CMOC was a leading member of Team Bergoglio, and although he was too old to take part in the 2013 conclave, was instrumental in persuading the English-speaking cardinals to back their man. So PF had reason to be grateful.
