Pope Francis likes to switch his papal staff out for a concoction of other ones. I wonder if the youth made the one he used this morning and if this is the idea of liturgical beauty that the youth of today have for papalware? If so, maybe we need artists to accompany them and the pope too?

Looks like something you’d use as a push-pole for a john boat in the Okefenokee Swamp. Or, cut off the top and you’ve got the start of a slingshot!
I read a comment elsewhere that it is a "V" with a nail through it for "Vigano" but certainly the Holy Father wouldn't demonize the good archbishop or call for his crucifixion?
He received this pastoral staff as a gift from the youth during a Youth Festival in Rome last August.
It is a shame that none of the youth were silversmiths or goldsmiths, and that none of them has access to precious jewels with which to adorn a "proper" ferula.
It's not my taste, but I'm not going to turn this into an occasion to ridicule him.
Francis just want to show that he can also be a hipster. But this one is too 1970ish.
Looks to me like a warlock's yew wand.
I much prefer Gandalf's staff! ;D
Bee here:
Someone elsewhere pointed out it looks like a witch's "stang." (I had to look it up.)
God bless.

Jack here...
I knew I had seen it somewhere in the past. I am not an authority on this, believe me, but that staff appears to be modeled after a “stang” that is used in witchery rituals. It was derived originally from deer antlers used in ancient pagan ceremonies.
Look it up.
