Cardinal Baum said of the Protestant contributors to the Consilium in 1967 to the Detroit News, "They are not simply there as observers, but as consultants as well, and they participate fully in the discussions on Catholic liturgical renewal. It wouldn't mean much if they just listened, but they contributed."
Dr. Robert McMee Brown, a Presbyterian Observer also said that there were occasions when the Observers were able to have a direct voice on the Council floor. "Is there anything you Observers want said on the Council floor about De Oecumenismo?" one bishop asked. The Observers then put their views in writing, to be incorporated into written interventions made on their behalf by bishops.
Harold OJ Brown said, ""To the extent that ecumenism minimizes the importance of doctrine and the content of religious ceremonies, as is currently being done in ecumenical worship, it is laying the necessary groundwork for interfaith worship, which is religion without doctrine, without meaning, and ultimately without God."
Bottom line, they were looking to change the Mass into something more palatable and open to the Protestants. Apparently it's working.
Father, I hope you'll watch (and perhaps repost) the following video. I find it to be very powerful - I think this is particularly the sort of internet video that is likely to drum up dormant priestly vocations!
Andy, if you haven't seen the series of videos by Fr. Anthony Cekada on youTube, I highly recommend them. I have yet to read his book on this subject, but plan to one day. He put out an annotated Ottaviani Intervention a few years ago.
This is the first in his video series (and should lead you to the others, which are all quite good).

NOTE - This priest is an unabashed sedevacantist, but he does not espouse that belief in these videos. His book is recognized, even by some in the Curia as impeccable scholarship on the history of the destruction of the Roman Rite following Vatican II. He personally holds to the pre-1955 Missals, which is (as far as I understand) one of the reasons he was kicked out of the SSPX.

Acutally, to be honest, I've conversed with Fr. Cekada before regading the book. His status as a priest notwithstanding, I think that it is the seminal work on the Novus Ordo to date.
