We Are Church International (WAC) confirmed to PinkNews that they will be participating in the Jubilee of Synodal Teams, held from 24 – 26 October 2025, as “another participating organisation”.
The group’s attendance is a positive sign for the LGBTQ+ community as the Pope has openly aired scepticism of LGBTQ+ reforms, declaring that family is “founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman”. He has, however, confirmed that blessings of same-sex marriages will remain.
I don’t know anything about that organization. I think Dignity was represented in previous discussion groups, but not Courage, which is orthodox. As it concerns blessings of same sex marriages, or couples, Pope Francis made it clear, by way of an interview, that in no way are same sex marriages blessed by FS, but rather individuals and that it is not a formal blessing, but a causal made-up blessing extended to the individuals, even if they are living in sin. Pope Leo needs to codify what Pope Francis said in an interview which is no way to make a magisterial statement but he did say it!
“Love between two persons, whether of the same sex or of a different sex, is to be treasured and respected… When two persons love, they experience in a limited manner in this world what will be their unending delight when one with God in the next… To love another, whether of the same sex or of a different sex, is to have entered the area of the richest human experience…”
(Cardinal Basil Hume, Note on the Teaching of the Catholic Church Concerning Homosexual People, 1995).
BB, I have been a priest for 45 years and of course by reading the NCR I have heard of that dinosaur of a group. That’s one dinosaur describing another. They are rather geriatric, no? Hopefully any heterodox ideas and gnostic beliefs they have will be tempered by their participation in the Synod, the Holy Spirit that, if they embrace HIIM, will convert them. Praise God for that. Pope Leo has made clear he will uphold Humanae Vitae and all that it means for people of good will when they embrace God rather than their own ideologies, some made up and only known to them (pseudo-Gnosticism.)
Cardinal Basil Hume was speaking about love as Pope Benedict XVI described it in his first encyclical “Deus Caritas”. Hume was not speaking about erotic love (Eros) which is rightly situated within marriage between one man and one woman. He would have spoken about the kind of love you indicate as “phiilia” the love of friendship or “agape”. Of course, Pope Leo is in continuity with Pope Francis, who explicitly said that sexual love is between one man and one woman and this is formally sacramentalized. Whereas the Church cannot bless the sexual love of those not married or of the same sex be they two or more people. So, BB, what’s your ideology and how does that mesh with the moral teachings of the Church as well as our Sacramental theology?
Correct. Cardinal Hume was talking about love between two persons (whether sexual or not, he later stated in same teaching document). His point was that all love comes from God and good can be found and valued between gay partners.
Blessing gay civil unions doesn’t equate to sacramental marriage.
“Blessing gay civil unions doesn’t equate to sacramental marriage.” Pope Francis ruled that out! No blessing of illicit unions that are sexual. Individual sinners are allowed to be blessed even in confession with sacramental absolution is not allowed. Pope Francis recommended that to priests when absolution was not possible. Pope Francis clarified more than once that illicit unions are not blessed, but the informal, non liturgical blessings could be offered to individuals in illicit or sinful unions involving sex. If the partners intend to live without sex, no problem in blessing their non sexual partnership.

Really, you never heard of We Are Church? They’re progressive and invited to the synod.

Well, you got your red shoes, Fr. Brick-by-brick.........I guess?
Sorry meant to write civil unions don’t equate to marriage (not blessing them).
