Swimming against the tide of moral relativism and political correctness of some high ranking Catholic Ordinaries, Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco, whose patron Saint is Saint Francis, threatens the nuclear option, not for destruction, but to save innocent unborn children and the souls who promote abortion on demand. WOW! A bishop concerned about the salvation of souls in the post-Vatican II Church! How pre-Vatican II can you get!
From Catholic Culture and Philip Lawlor:
Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco has once again challenged those politicians—and his fellow bishops—with an op-ed that appeared in the Washington Post. Decrying the continued slaughter of the unborn, he wrote:
As a faith leader in the Catholic community, I find it especially disturbing that so many of the politicians on the wrong side of the preeminent human rights issue of our time are self-professed Catholics.
Archbishop Cordileone named names (Biden, Pelosi), and he pointedly mentioned the precedent that was set in 1962 when Archbishop Joseph Rummel of New Orleans excommunicated three segregationist leaders. Perhaps most important, from a pastoral perspective, he mentioned the happy ending to that story: “Two of the three later repented and died Catholics in good standing.”

I am even more disturbed that bishops and priests vote for the Democratic Party which actively promotes the destruction of the unborn. Pelosi even demanded that stimulus money for the abortion industry during the pandemic, "healthcare" you know.
Now the left will be digging into Archbishop Cordileone's trash can and combing his kindergarten records for "scandal."
TJM:
Why are you not equally disturbed by those who vote for the Trump, I mean Republican, Party which actively promotes the destruction of those who have been born?
We should be disturbed by both Parties. Why aren’t you?
Mark,
LOL - your strawman argument is ridiculous and flies in the face of facts. There is no moral equivalence between the parties. The Republican Party does not advocate for funding to kill the unborn nor providing funds during the pandemic to keep the abortionatoriums open. Moreover, President Trump did not start any new hot wars, the only president in my lifetime not to do so. He also did more for minorities than ANY US president, creating jobs and increasing their real wages, lowering their unemployment rate to historic lows, something that neither Obama did nor is Biden doing. Hell, Biden immediately cost union members their jobs when he cancelled the pipeline, which angered Canada, but made the Hollywood and faculty lounge weirdos happy.
Democratic controlled cities like Chicago, run by Democrats for decades, are a mess and it is their policies which allows the gangs to go on killing each other, whether by gun, knives, or pianos tossed out of a window. BLM and Antifa, the Democratic Party's brownshirts, have destroyed minority homes and businesses on a fairly large scale. This is not the legacy of Trump nor Republicans. And where is Obama? Hanging out in Martha's Vineyard with the swells having superspreader parties during the pandemic.
You need to stop living in your fantasyland where you parrot New York Times and DNC talking points. They are Goebbels successors.
TJM:
You miss the point, whether deliberately or not I cannot tell. It should not be necessary but now I will be explicit.
Here are some facts for you to chew on:
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/unvaccinated-america-in-5-charts/
A sample:
“Compared to the “wait-and-see” group, those in the “definitely not” group have larger proportions of non-Hispanic white adults, Republicans, adults living in rural areas and white evangelical Christians.
The 14 percent of Americans who are firmly opposed to getting the vaccine are overwhelmingly non-Hispanic white adults, they are much more likely to be insured, and they are more likely to identify as Republican.”
Now why, do you suppose, it is Republicans who are so much more likely to be firmly opposed to getting the vaccination? Could it conceivably have something to do with the fact that so many Republican politicians and their media lackeys have whipped them up? And why didn’t Trump do more to encourage his base to get vaccinated? He could have made so much of the fact that we had the vaccine because of his “operation warp speed” vaccine development program. But no. Not only did he not get vaccinated publicly to set an example. When he gets a little boo at one of his rallies for suggesting they get vaccinated, he folds immediately and scurries back under his freedumb rock:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA306aNtvmk
Sad! No, not sad, pathetic! As a result, doubtless more of his base will die.
The cynical side of me strongly suspects Republican politicians and their media lackeys encouraged vaccine hesitancy and opposition because they thought it would hurt Biden and the Democrats and that it was only when they realized how many voters Republicans were losing or were likely to lose, as in permanently, that some of them began to change their tune—very, very belatedly—and started to encourage vaccinations.
The following two articles (which I expect you will immediately dismiss without even reading them) summarize the sick process involved in whipping up and pandering to the base:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/08/24/how-trumpian-politics-stoke-coronavirus-pandemic/
https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/covid-vaccine-resistance-capitol-riot-stem-gop-long-weaponizing-distrust-ncna1275744
The first piece also summarizes the result:
“And meanwhile hundreds more people die each day from covid, nearly all having embraced their God-given freedom to reject a simple injection that could have saved their lives.”
So, please don’t talk about Democrats and the unborn unless you are also prepared to call out high profile members of the Trump Party and their media lackeys like Tucker Carlson for actively impeding the vaccination program and mitigation efforts such as masking. Catholics should be opposed to all anti-life forces not just those that fit their political allegiances.
Mark,
You still have not supported your outrageous claim that Republicans promote the destruction of those of us that have been born. You must have been a helluva professor of law. I would have expected you to address each of my points seriatim with proof of where I am mistaken.
But alas, like Mark Thomas, you are engaging in changing the subject. Bottom line: Republicans don't support intrinsic evil, Democrats do.
By the way, the survival rate for covid is around 99.5% depending of course upon which age group you fall in and whether you have co-morbidities. The survival rate for aborton is 0%.
Now go back and read the New York Times so you know what to think today.
Here is more "civility" from the left (non Republicans)
Wednesday’s Elder Egg Attack is just one more sign that the American left generally, and California specifically, have lost their collective minds.
Facing a hostile crowd while visiting Venice, Calif. yesterday, Republican recall election gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder was hit on the head with an egg thrown by a mostly peaceful protestor wearing a gorilla mask and shouting obscenities at him.
TJM:
No, I had in mind the completely unnecessary and preventable deaths from Covid-19, which I strongly suspect you well understood but ignored and instead changed the subject yourself. I then made the point explicit.
But I do I see now. It’s okay for high profile Republican leaders and their media lackeys to have a callous disregard for human life because they did not kill everyone with Covid-19, just a few hundred thousand over the course of the pandemic (although not all to be sure) and now most recently due to the Delta variant. Silly me. (I will not quibble about your 99.5% figure, although the figures I have seen are different and closer to 2% fatality rate since the beginning of the pandemic)
In fact, despite your tendentious comparison of relative survival rates from abortion and Covid-19, these Republican leaders and their media lackeys are_far more_culpable than most Democrats who support abortion. Why? Because the latter do not share our premise that the developing human being in the womb and therefore inside, not outside, another human being (especially in the first few weeks of pregnancy when the embryo/fetus does not even look recognizably human) is as worthy of protection as a human being who is already born and living independently outside of the womb. By contrast, Republicans and their media lackeys can claim no such ignorance about all those unvaccinated whose blood is on their hands.
But it is pointless trying to engage in a rational conversation with you. As I have pointed out several times already, I am quite willing to criticize Biden and Democrats where that is warranted. But, just like Trump himself, you never concede anything. Unlike the Great Leader himself, however, who exemplifies narcissism on steroids, you are a fanatical follower of the Great Leader. And it is impossible to reason with fanatics.
Now go back and read the latest marching orders from Mar-A-Lago so you know what to think and say today.
Mark,
Yes, I think Governor Cuomo should have been investigated as well as Mayor DeBlasio and Nancy Pelosi who told people to go out and have a great time, stick it to the man. Recall it was President Trump who stopped travel from Red China and was called a racist by leading Democrats, like Chuck Schumer.
It is pointless to engage in rational conversation with you because you strenuously avoid facts which conflict with your leftwing world view (not a Catholic one, I might add). You NEVER criticize Biden without first explaining that the mean old Republicans are EQUALLY at fault. Moral equivalence is used by those who simply cannot acknowledge their side has greater moral culpability.
FYI, I get most of my news from British newspapers who honestly report on what is happening in the US, containing articles critical of the Senile Grifter, something his watercarriers in the US fail to do.
Mark,
Here is one for you to wrestle with:
Do a search for “Larry Elder” and gorilla on the CNN website and nothing comes up. Washington Post? Zilch. Nothing comes up on The New York Times site either, although if you make it to the 15th paragraph of a story titled “The Vice President pushed back against the effort to recall Newsom in the Bay Area,” you will find a bland passing reference to Wednesday’s disgusting incident.
According to our nation’s media leaders, it’s not a story that a white person wearing a gorilla mask attacked Larry Elder, a black man seeking to become the first non-white governor of California, by hurling an egg that touched his head.
If Elder were a Democrat, the attack would have been instantly and with good reason dubbed racist. It would not only be front-page news, it would be just about the only news you were hearing about today on CNN and MSNBC. Charles Blow, Perry Bacon and Jamelle Bouie would each be writing the first in a series of angry columns about it. So would Gail Collins, Jonathan Capehart, Jennifer Rubin, Michelle Goldberg, Paul Krugman, Maureen Dowd, Dana Milbank and Ezra Klein.
TJM:
Sorry but all your attempts to blow smoke will not work. Everyone can see that you still refuse to concede any fault on the part of Trump and high-profile members of the Trump (aka Republican) Party and their media lackeys (even assuming arguendo that I do what you say I do)—unless, of course, a concession is implied in the little word “yes” or your use of the word “greater” in the phrase “greater moral culpability.”
And I thought Cuomo_was_being investigated over the nursing home debacle (isn’t that one of the reasons he resigned, to try to avoid the investigation?).
I also get a great deal of my news from Britain, but I expose myself to more than the Daily Mail. I hope you do too.
And I agree with you that the media is biased. CNN’s failure to report that gorilla mask incident matches FOX News’ failure to report Matt Zeller's criticism of Trump and Biden over the Afghan SIVs and their failure to televise the Trump impeachment hearings during prime time. As the WSJ says, the media clearly have double standards (rather like politicians, no?). By the way, don’t be so quick to dismiss Ezra Klein. In my experience he is quite fair minded. We will see if he addresses the incident at some point.
Did you get your (well-taken) talking point about the gorilla mask incident from the New York Post?:

Please provide a citation next time, together with the colon, to avoid a possible impression of plagiarism.
Finally, please justify your accusation that I have a “left wing worldview (not a Catholic one)” and when you do so please provide proper evidence and citations to what I have written and positions I have taken. Also, please define “left wing” in a way that is not simply synonymous with “whatever disagrees with TJM's views.” Good luck.
Correction – FOX News’ failure to report Matt Zeller's criticism of Trump and Stephen Miller over the Afghan SIVs
