Fr Zed has hit the ball out of the park with this one. He is easier on Bergoglio than many others are inclined to be, but then he actually knows the guy. All the same, TC is littered with insinuations, unfounded conclusions and arrant falsehoods which PF has reiterated in this interview. Whether he wrote all of it, some of it, or simply laid out the general principles and left it to others to fill in the details, is immaterial. It appeared 'motu proprio' over his signature. This makes him a liar and might well invalidate the whole document.
In the interview he adds to the deceit by dissembling over the clear intention and desired impact of the document. To say that he is being 'economical with the truth' or using the Jesuit practice, when under hostile interrogation, of equivocation does not go far enough.
When asked about the controversial footnote in Chapter 8 of Amoris Laetitia he claimed to have no knowledge of it. Yes, he didn't write the offending chapter, leaving it to 'Tucho' Fernandez, but are we to believe he let an Apostolic Exhortation go out in his name without actually reading it?
PF is another “fruit” of Vatican II. Unless the intention was to send the Church into a state of decline, those who implemented its decrees were maladroit incompetents. It would be entertaining to see if the “usual suspects” arrive here to defend him. Like you, I was initially inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, but no more. The sooner this papacy sunsets, the better.
The notion that the 'proclamation of the Word' must be 'in a language that everyone understands' is nonsense. No such language exists. When, in St Peter's, the Gospel is chanted in Latin (or Greek) I don't see anyone 'laughing at the Word of God'. When, as often happens, one of the readings is in English, is PF (who has no English) laughing?
PF's words and actions would be laughable if their effects were less tragic. There's room in the Church for 'holy fools' but please God, not occupying the Chair of Peter.
This story at Father Z's describes in story form what is going on with older clergy who are hostile to our Catholic liturgical tradition and persist on the current failed liturgical experiment of the past 50 years. I call this a "must read." I believe Father Fox will find this persuasive as well:
