A GOOD EXAMPLE OF INCULTURATION IN ART WORK

Main Altar of the Gereja Hati Kudus Yesus

(Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), Bantul, Indonesia

The church also houses an image of Jesus depicted as a Javanese king

I have held off on comment trying to figure out a better way to say something, but finally gave up. I do not like it because it is done in the same style and garb of the local pantheon of gods, and seems it merely adds Jesus to the list as just another god.

Nearly every bit of it would fit seamlessly into an old local temple. It is not as if when that artwork was done that anyone still dressed locally in such a manner. It was done to mimic their own ancient religions and expression.

I am not a fan of art which depicts historical persons and events in local current fashionable garb, either, not Jesus and disciples dressed in high middle ages clothing, nor dressed in jeans, sandals and with tattoos.
