THESE AREN'T MY SISTERS OF SAINT JOSEPH OF CORONDELET! BABIES YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY, JUST IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!

UPDATED, UPDATED, UPDATED! GO TO THE BOTTOM AND SEE HOW YAHOO NEWS, UK, DEPICTS THE NUNS!

When I was taught by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Corondelet based in St. Louis, in the late 50's and early 60's, this is what they looked like. I think they had two or three habits at the most and that was it as this was before they reimagined the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience:

Carondelet Groundbreaking 1965

But this is how they look now and "renewal" has brought new ministries and maybe even prison ministry! Press title for full story:

LOS ANGELES, California - Two nuns who worked for decades at a Catholic school in California embezzled a “substantial” amount of money from tuition and other funds and used it to pay for gambling trips to Las Vegas, church officials said Monday.
The embezzlement from Saint James Catholic School in Torrance appears to have gone on for as long as 10 years, Archdiocese of Los Angeles media relations director Adrian Alarcon said.

During that time Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper was the school’s principal and Sister Lana Chang taught eighth grade students. Both retired earlier this year. Neither has been charged with a crime.

The amount taken from tuition payments and other funds is still being tabulated, Alarcon said, adding she couldn’t confirm some reports that it was as much as $500,000.

My comment and question:  I was just listening to Gus Lloyd's, Seize the Day program and he was having a call-in discussion about this same topic and if the two Sisters should be charged, put on trial and do prison time. There is some talk that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles may not press charges, but that is up in the air.

Given all the news  about priests who abused minors and were given a pass when clearly they broke the law, should the Church just turn these crimes, all of them, over to the authorities and let civil trials decide their fate???????????

And Yahoo News, UK uses this picture for the same story. I wonder if the nuns depicted in this picture can sue Yahoo UK for using their photo as the nuns who are accused in the US?????????????????? John Nolan should know!

I was taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, an offshoot from the St. Joseph of Carondelet order and it was the same thing. The habits went, they became completely focused on social issues and the vocations dropped. Soon a school staffed by mostly nuns became staffed by mostly lay teachers. After I graduated, a new principal was appointed, a lay person.

I tried to console myself by telling myself that this "new Church" of Vatican II only changed the "externals" and the other stuff wasn't important, but it was no consolation at all. There are actually younger orders of nuns who embrace tradition and wear habits and they are doing quite well. These older orders are on life support.

This is where I risk sounding cruel, but it's true. Seeing old women dressed in lay clothes claiming to be nuns just grates on me. When you see a woman in the habit, regardless of age, it brings an otherworldly beauty to them and awakens a sense of gratitude for their sacrifice. When I see women who have to go to Lane Bryant and buy hairspray claiming to be nuns, it just doesn't add up for me.

Whenever I see a habited nun--which is not often down here in Protestantland--I thank them for their witness. This is one of many reasons I wanted to homeschool my children.

LOL - another Vatican Disaster II "Renewal" story. I believe it's Carondolet. Sister would rap your knuckles for that spelling mistake!

I would add that it is not unusual for these more "enlightened" modern nuns--take the Sisters of Christian Community, for example--to have no problem embracing practices and ideas contrary to the Catholic faith. Look on the internet. You will find nuns as abortion clinic escorts, practicing Reiki, leading New Age retreats and working for the election of Pro-abort candidates for office because of "social justice" concerns. The embezzlement doesn't surprise me at all. I have heard of modern nuns who've befriended rich patrons who will take them to a spa after the nun said, "We need to treat ourselves!"

Robert, why would you home-school your children because nuns don't wear habits anymore? Are you married to a nun who wears a habit? I don't get the connection.

Robert Kumpel,

Did you notice in your Church this weekend the appeal for $ for retired religous? Miraculously, they were wearing the habit, or at least a modified one. What fraudsters!!!

I am going to assume that Anonymous is not playing stupid with me. I wanted to homeschool my children because the Catholic schools have all gone seriously downhill. The nuns losing their habits was only a symptom. When they pulled out the Baltimore Catechisms and gave us religion books with pictures of daisies on them and stories about Gandhi, I knew something was wrong.

TJM: I once took a public relations class taught by a man who knew his stuff. He was telling us about how they developed pamphlets to raise money for Mercy Hospital in San Diego, once staffed by the Sisters of Mercy. Over loud objections, he insisted that the nun in charge of administration pose for the pamphlet photo in a habit, even though she had not worn one in years. He knew seeing that traditional look would more likely get the checkbooks to open up.

BTW, the fraud exists throughout the media. If you see a Catholic Church scene on any TV show, you hear organ music and see a beautiful church interior with statues and stained glass windows and a sanctuary where people whisper. If they wanted to give an accurate depiction of a 21st Century post Vatican II Church, it would be a modern, bland looking building with asymetrical angles and no music at all or maybe a folk group or pianist rehearshing those insipid songs from the Glory and Praise hymnal. And since few priests remind the congregation Whose Presence they are in, everyone would be talking as loudly as they pleased in the church.

Yes, the dreaded Hollywood fraud. I can't tell you how many time I have seen Jesus played by an Anglo.

TJM said...

Maybe in England nuns don't wear pantsuits like they do in the US!

Anonymous, "Anglo?" Race baiting are we?

"Anonymous, "Anglo?" Race baiting are we?"

No, stating the facts. Among them, Jesus wasn't Anglo.

1. Diogo Morgado, Son Of God (2014) Portugese
2. Ewan McGregor, Last Days in the Desert (2015) Scottish
3. Christian Bale, Mary, Mother of Jesus (1999) English-American
4. Ted Neely, Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) American
5. Henry Ian Cusick, The Visual Bible: The Gospel of John (2003) Scottish-Peruvian
6. Robert Powell, Jesus of Nazareth (1977) English
7. Jim Caviezel, The Passion of the Christ (2004) American (Slovak-Swiss-Irish)
8. Max von Sydow, The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) Swede
9. Jeremy Sisto, Jesus (1999) American
10. Jeffrey Hunter, King of Kings (1961) American

You see, in watching films of stage plays we suspend disbelief. We know that what we see on the screen or stage is not real or historically accurate. But we look beyond that to the deeper reality that we, also, know exists.

It's not "fraudulent." It's a matter of how we take in what we see.

Gambling in Vegas?????? REALLY Sisters?????

What part of them didn't know this was wrong on so many levels? What part of them identified as "religious" in any way?

Scandals certainly will come, but even Jesus said woe to those who come as wolves in sheeps' clothing.

I do think they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

God bless.

Since 'Anglo' only exists as a prefix in proper English (e.g. Anglo-Indian, Anglo-Irish) I had to google it to find that in American argot it means a white American of non-Hispanic descent. Presumably a counterpart to 'Dago'.

I once saw a religious sister in jeans and make-up leaning on a bar and smoking a cigarette, accompanied by a casually-dressed man who happened to be a priest. This was about thirty years ago, and they were American Vincentians.

Most sisters over here dress like district nurses from the 1950s. You couldn't call it a habit.

John Nolan,

But that clothing does sound more dignified than our pantsuit nuns.

Until our liberal "betters" in the US started making this distinction, I always considered persons of Spanish descent White. But Marxists like to place folks into distinct groups to manipulate them.

At some point in time Nun shifted from being a religious woman who is a member of a religious order, and turned into an over worked underpayed grade school teacher. Something caused Thelma and Louise to shed those habits before heading to Vegas.

Really? "Something" caused them to "shed those habits"? How about Vatican II and the modern heterodox progressive b.s. that is spouted in the universities that form these "religious" and the modern ideologies that exist among these communities of women?

God bless.
