NOT ONLY DID I CONCELEBRATE THE MARIAN MASS OF MERCY TODAY WITH POPE FRANICS, I ALSO DISTRIBUTED HOLY COMMUNIOIN AND AFTER THE MASS WAS ABLE TO SHAKE THE HAND OF THE HOLY FATHER AS HE VISITED WITH THE CONCELEBRATING PRIESTS AND LINGERED WITH US!

Another cool thing and totally unexpected was that Pope Francis named new cardinals at the end of the Mass following the Angelus which is a part of the concluding rites of the Mass when the Holy Father celebrates a large outdoor Mass on a Sunday.

You can watch the Marian Mass for the Year of Mercy by pressing here!
At communion time you can see us priests going into the congregation to distribute Holy Communion   From the Gospel side of the altar. We held our ciborium for us to consecrate along with the Holy Father.

At the end of Mass when the pope is greeting us priest I am visible quite a few times. I have sun glasses on. Can you pick me out????

These are the new cardinals that His Holiness announced to the world and I was there!

You shook his hand. Gee father under normal circumstances I would say hurry over and see Fr. Gabriele Amorth but as he just died I don't know what to say. Um good luck. If your bed starts shaking tonight I guess you are on your own as nobody in Rome seems to care about the Devil.

Bee here:

I don't know if the list of new cardinals was published in advance, but this is the first list I've seen the list who they are, and by some sort of premonition (or maybe just because I know how these things go) I knew Blase Cupich would be on it, and lo and behold, there's his name.

How'd I know??????!!!!??? (Smirk)

So many orthodox bishops to choose from, and yet....

I sometimes wonder if God just says to Himself, "do what you will, O man... I still win. But why does it have to be in spite of you, instead of because of you?"

(Fr. McD - wonderful to get highlights of your time in Roma. Safe travels. Hope your parish and homestead in Savannah are okay.)

Since there is no F.S.S.P. S.P.P.X. or Institute of Christ the King where I live I took refuge in an Anglican-Catholic parish. You would think upon stepping into this parish that you were in any Roman Catholic Church circa 1952. High altar, marble communion rail, over twenty statues of saints, four confessionals, votive candles galore, chapel dedicated to Our Lady, and High Mass complete with Gregorian chant, Latin, incense, Mozart, Palestrina, altar boys only, deacon and sub-deacon, kneeling and receiving on the tongue only, women wearing mantillas, men and boys in suits, priests wearing Gothic and Roman chasubles and maniples, YES this is an Anglo-Catholic Church yet it is TOTALLY ROMAN AND CATHOLIC than any Novus Ordo house of worship, sadly ironic is it not??? This is what VATICAN II has done to the once MIGHTY ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, it truly breaks my heart.

Maybe a better question is - did the Pope think about all the insulting things he has written and said about orthodox Catholics (including priests) during his pontificate when he was shaking hands? If not, why?

Go back and reread his comments about faithful Catholics, who feel like he has nothing but disrespect for these men and women.

You may keep your dancing girls, altar girls, lay women running around the altar pretending they are priests, guitars, drums, hand holding, kiss of peace or worse, ghastly music if you can call it that, felt banners, standing and receiving Holy Communion, free standing dinner table, hand clapping, no crucifix, no central tabernacle, no communion rail, and the list can go on. I will take the TRUE MASS OF ALL TIMES and contrary to Novus Ordo propaganda the TLM was in force centuries before the Council of Trent!! FACTS FOLKS JUST THE COLD HARD FACTS!! Cardinal Sarah in his recent book 'La Force du Silence contre la Dictature du Bruit' is highly critical of 'mega-Masses' where Communion is distributed indiscriminately to the crowd, as leading to profanation. In the past, there were open-air Masses with vast congregations, for example at the Eucharistic congress in Dublin in 1932, but the faithful did not communicate. Also, if you watch the newsreels of the closing Mass in the Phoenix Park the multitude is devout and reverent, in stark contrast to the flag-waving and attention-seeking rabble in St Peter's Square last Sunday.

I can take some comfort from the fact that since most of the ciboria were not placed on the altar at the Consecration their contents were in all likelihood not consecrated at all. Hasn't this occurred to anyone?

John Nolan said...

'Ciboria do not have to be placed on the altar for the hosts they contain to be consecrated'. Why then, is the ciborium placed on the altar before the Consecration? If, by some mischance, it was left on the credence table, would the celebrant simply assume that the contents were consecrated and distribute from it? I suspect not.

In the Novus Ordo it is not uncommon to see the paten replaced by a large bowl or dish containing the hosts to be distributed at that Mass. It is still placed on the altar of sacrifice.

I don't doubt that some dicastery official has altered the rules for these mega-Masses, but in a matter as important as this we need to be one hundred per cent sure.

Anonymous said...

Any serious analysis of the validity of "consecration at a distance" of hosts in ciboria held by priests remote from the altar at a mega-Mass, would degenerate into ridiculous questions such as the maximal distance at which such presumed consecrations can take place, whether the priest holding the ciboria has to have a direct line of sight to the altar and the principal celebrant, etc. Or whether the hosts get consecrated in a ciborium carried by a priest a block away who's not even participating in the spectacle. How about 2 blocks away. Surely there's a message in this nonsense. If the Church has no better judgement--and care for the Blessed Sacrament--than to stage these dubious affairs, then better for the faithful to exercise their better judgement to stay away from them.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

The intention of the celebrant, if it is in line with the thinking of the Church, (no, the Church does not 'think' all the bread in the bakery can be consecrated), determines what is/is not consecrated. Ciboria set on a table near the altar ARE consecrated, as are the hosts in ciboria in the hands of the priests who will distribute communion at papal masses.

Fr. K, in the case of a country like North Korea where foreign priests are almost impossible to get visas and the people are left without pastors, could a priest in a free land consecrate hosts at that sort of distance?

This isn't a slippery slope gotcha question. I do think in spiritual issues like the Eucharist that your point is well put, after all, if we go the other way then only the bread touched by the priest would become Body and only the drink in the cup raised become the blood.

So obviously since for centuries priests have validly consecrated bread put in golden vessels and wine in various cups, their physical location on the altar is an accidental not constitutive of the miracle.

But this does open a valid question as to whether it's possible (vs. licit) to remotely consecrate hosts and wine. This sort of thing would make TV masses or masses to vast numbers of Catholics left without a priest suddenly very real and possible.

As it is, I suspect with the combination of decreased priestly vocations and coming persecutions, we will have many more St. Tarcisius' giving their lives to protect the Blessed Sacrament from sacrilege.

I guess that the nuns are unfamiliar with the fact that His Holiness Pope Francis has time and again declared that marriage exists only between a man and woman. As to the nuns and Pope Francis' "who am I to judge him" comment...

Pope Francis' comment in question was in response to a reporter's question. Pope Francis talked about a person of good will who sought the Lord. The person in question confessed his sins. The person in question reformed his life. The person in question was forgiven.

That is Catholicism 101. Seek the Lord...confess one's sins...reform one's life.

Why would the nuns in question use Catholic teaching to justify their sins?

Pope Francis also referenced the Catechism of the Catholic Church's teachings on homosexuality. The nuns in question cannot possibly employ Pope Francis' comments to legitimize their "marriage" as he presented Church teaching.

Pope Francis said:

"But if a person, whether it be a lay person, a priest or a religious sister, commits a sin and then converts, the Lord forgives, and when the Lord forgives, the Lord forgets and this is very important for our lives.

"When we confess our sins and we truly say, “I have sinned in this”, the Lord forgets, and so we have no right not to forget, because otherwise we would run the risk of the Lord not forgetting our sins.

"But, returning to your question more concretely. In this case, I conducted the preliminary investigation and we didn’t find anything. This is the first question. Then, you spoke about the gay lobby. So much is written about the gay lobby.

"If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him? The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this in a beautiful way, saying ... wait a moment, how does it say it ... it says: “no one should marginalize these people for this, they must be integrated into society”.

"The problem is not having this tendency, no, we must be brothers and sisters to one another, and there is this one and there is that one. The problem is in making a lobby of this tendency: a lobby of misers, a lobby of politicians, a lobby of masons, so many lobbies. For me, this is the greater problem. Thank you so much for asking this question. Many thanks."

I agree with Mark Thomas, but it would help if the HF would clarify his remarks. If he considers 'gender ideology' such a threat he needs to define exactly what he understands by the term, which is relatively new, and explain clearly why he considers it a threat. I doesn't require a long dissertation ghost-written by someone else - JP II's 'Ordinatio sacerdotalis' is admirably brief and to the point.

Having watched the mega-Mass I observed the following. The Pope concelebrated mass more or less in the normal way. The priests in ranks on the southern side (remember the Pope was celebrating ad orientem!) processed with their ciboria into the crowd immediately after the Pax and before the Fraction, and began distributing Communion.

Regardless of whether or not their hosts were subject to 'remote consecration', or whether or not they actually said the words of consecration, or whether or not they communicated themselves before leaving their places (which would be highly irregular given that the Pope had not said the Ecce Agnus Dei), they cannot be said to be concelebrants unless they also received the Precious Blood. A lay person or a non-celebrating priest may receive under one species only, but not a celebrating or concelebrating priest. Did they do so? I didn't see it.

Anonymous said...

" . . . they cannot be said to be concelebrants unless they also received the Precious Blood."

If they do not consummate the sacrifice of the Mass by receiving the Precious Blood, is their function simply the same as that of the priest who comes over from the rectory--or out of the confessional--at communion time to assist in distribution? That is, priests serving as ministers of holy communion (rather than as concelebrants, whatever they think or have been told their role is).

rcg said...

This is an interesting topic because it seems that this would have an ideal concern for Vatican II as a need to provide an understanding and option for Masses in this modern era of huge throngs on people.

I think the most damaging words from Pope Francis were at the beginning of his pontificate when he said we should not be obsessed about abortion and homosexuality and he said it at a time when the devil is most stridently attacking the family on those two fronts. It sure seems as if the Pope is not supportive of the pro life movement and it emboldened liberal 'catholics' who place more importance on their liberal political ideology than on the teachings of Jesus.

From Cardinal Sarah's famous address:

"I think, that we need to rethink their appropriateness, especially if they lead priests into this sort of scandalous behaviour that is so unworthy of the mystery being celebrated, or if the sheer size of these concelebrations leads to a risk of the profanation of the Blessed Eucharist."

Jus, it is not, as far as I can tell, the intention or thinking of the Church that a priest can/should consecrate bread/wine at a distance removed from the physical celebration.

Catholic sacramental theology requires the personal presence of the bishop/priest for all sacraments. (A bishop can't ordain w/o laying on of hands, a priest can't give absolution over the phone or internet.)

The Incarnation underlies this understanding of thr necessity of personal presence. It is a "human" thing, if you will.

"The Incarnation underlies this understanding of the necessity of personal presence."

That is a bit of bad theology or, at least, careless theological language. The efficacy of God's grace is not predicated upon human presence of any kind. God's presence and power are not contingent upon any determination of being. The Priest is chosen by God and given the grace to mediate God's presence. He is not necessary as an efficient cause or an ontological determinant.

Mark Thomas said...

Johnny C, in September 2013 A.D., via his interview with America Magazine, His Holiness Pope Francis acknowledged that he did not speak often about abortion. He said that he had been "reprimanded" for that.

The day after the interview was published on America's web site, Pope Francis condemned abortion, From September 2013 A.D. to date, Pope Francis has time and again condemned abortion.

In fairness to him, in 2013 A.D., early during his Pontificate, he joined Rome's March for Life. He encouraged the pro-life marchers to remain attached to the Culture of Life.

Anyway, in September 2013 A.D., Pope Francis accepted the "reprimand" in question. Pope Francis has since spoken frequently against abortion.

Pope Francis is a staunch promoter of the Culture of Life.

There is nothing careless or bad in my statement.

Grace Builds On Nature.

The necessity of personal presence is predicated on the Incarnation. The Incarnation, with its fleshiness, it earthiness, it's materiality is the glory of our broken humanity.

No ordination takes place unless a human bishop lays his human hands on the human head of the human candidate for ordination. Take one of those humans out of the picture and the "efficacy" of the grace of ordination is moot.

The consecration of bread and wine is wholly contingent on the words and actions of the priest, of his human presence in that moment, in that place, praying those words over these material elements.

Gene said...

Kavanaugh, as usual, you miss the point entirely.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Gene, I do not. The Incarnation underlies everything about our sacramental system, including the necessity of the physical presence of the bishop/priest for the celebration thereof.

Grace does, indeed, build on nature.

Gene said...

The necessity is an institutional/ritualistic one, not a theological one. Kavanaugh, it is simple Biblical/ Trinitarian theology...nothing about God, His essence, the efficacy of His grace, His presence is predicated upon any human initiative. To say otherwise diminishes God and is, ultimately, Pelagian. It really isn't that difficult.

Gene said...

The only Sacraments required for one to be in a State of Grace are Baptism and Penance. Either can be administered without a Priest, the latter upon condition that the Confession will be confirmed by a Priest later. Even matrimony can be done without a Priest and confirmed later in the Church. There is no ontological requirement not any efficient cause provided by the presence of a Priest. God's grace is efficacious completely independently of human cause and effect or human initiative. Simply put, God does not need us...worship, ritual, Sacraments are for us by his gift. He does not need them. To say otherwise is BS (that is a theological term).

George said...

Human beings are instruments in the hands of the Divine Priest, Christ Jesus, in conveying grace through His Holy Sacraments. This is an unmerited gift to us, that God out of His Love and Generosity gave us a role as co-operators in His work of salvation in the distribution of His grace. God surely does not need us in that He is complete and whole in His incomprehensible being and in His Divine Substance and Essence; and therefore not dependent on anything or anyone else for His existence, nor likwise for anything else that is encompassed in His Divine Nature and Being. God,through His love and generosity, has made us His adopted sons and daughters and participators in His Love and Divine Mercy.
We can, to be sure, acquire grace outside the Sacraments and we can do this through prayer and acts of mercy. We can also do it through the use of sacramentals, such as Holy Water.
We please God when we do what He desires of us. It is to our spiritual benefit when we do what is pleasing to God. His gift of love for us becomes our gift of love back to Him. When we please God it redounds to our benefit and to His honor. Through our spiritual works and actions, the Image and Likeness of God which we are made in, evinces it's pre-eminent purpose and produces its Divinely desired manifestation, and this because our God desires it and has made it so. There exists a mutual spiritual symbiosis in our right relationship to the Divine Being. Out of His Love for us, He makes necessary and pleasing to Himself that which He doesn't need because He subsists in Himself, but nonetheless desires of us; He likewise makes necessary to us that which we do and which is for our spiritual benefit, but can only come from us because He desires it, and so He provides to us the necessary grace.

As it says in John 17:
"..so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me."

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Gene, how does the ordination of a priest or the consecration of bread and wine take place without the presence of a bishop and/or priest?
