HOLY THURSDAY AT ST. JOSEPH, 2009, SHOWN IN SEPTUAGESIMA, 2010

A BLAST FROM THE RECENT PAST: Now that I know how to post pictures, but little else, these are random, and out of order photos from 2009's beginning of the Easter Triduum, Holy Thursday's Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, Ordinary Form. Includes receiving the Sacred Chrism consecrated at the Cathedral on Holy Tuesday as well as the "Transfer of the Most Holy Eucharist" and stripped altar--again out of order, you make them logical. The first one isn't logical, I'm in green, so must be from an Ordinary Time, Ordinary Mass, unlike Extraordinary Time Easter Triduum. Posted this one by accident, but nice anyway, so why delete it? And after all it's not Holy Thursday, but it is snowing outside in Macon, Georgia! Yip Pee!

Father, you don't have to post this comment. I just would like your opinion of the treatment that Mr. Kumpel has received. I find that my conscience forces me to support him even though I seem to be alone. I wrote about it here:

Sigh . . . only men . . . only white men having their feet washed. Were there another 6 waiting in the wings who represent Christ's act of service to the whole Church? Just curious.

Yes, we can sigh that only white men are chosen, although we have tried in the past to have Asian, black and Native American. But our black population is not that large and as you know it is hard to get anyone to say yes to this ritual. At St. Joseph we follow the rubrics in the Roman Missal for this optional rite. Since it is a night to celebrate the institution of the Most Holy Eucharist (the Mass) by our Lord at the Last Supper anticipating then His Holy Sacrifice of Good Friday, it is also a night to celebrate the other major sacrament that Jesus instituted on Holy Thursday, Holy Orders, the priesthood, to perpetuate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass until the Lord returns. So the point of service that Jesus calls, His Apostles to live is that of a Sacrament, Ministerial Priesthood to the service of God and neighbor. This includes not only the "ritual" aspect of priesthood in the Old Testament Since, but also the "serving" aspect of meeting the spiritual needs of God's people, especially the poor. In other words the cultic priesthood of the Church is not just for the temple but for the priest's everyday life.
Now, in terms of the priesthood of the laity, that comes from the Sacraments of Holy Baptism and Confirmation, strengthen by the Mass which Jesus instituted on Holy Thursday night and perpetuated by the ministerial priesthood of MEN chosen by God and the Church to enable God's priestly people to be not only "cultic" but of the Word and of Service, in particular to the poor. But in terms of the laity's priesthood and service, I think that is better left to Pentecost or The Baptism of the Lord or some other such feast.

There is no question but that it must be men who have their feet washed, not only the 2002 Roman Missal state, but the 1988 Letter "Paschales Solemnitatis" issued by the CDW state also that it must be men.

When you questioned the use of bleached candles for a Requiem I thought perhaps you were speaking from a position of orthodoxy, but now to see you question Father McDonald when he follows the Rubrics I am beginning to think you neither are for or against Orthodoxy and perhaps simply enjoy trolling for a reaction, taking always a position against the poster regardless of content of the post.

Perhaps Father McDonald is wrong to assume you are a Priest because you use the Latin Pater in your name. Perhaps Pater Ignotus in your case has a more historical based context.
