Although the Scalise shooter was a Bernie Sanders fan, neither he nor any other Democrat had advocated violence against him & Sanders himself was quick to condemn the shooting in no uncertain terms. Compare this to our Fuhrer-wannabe said the news media brought bombs on themselves because they’ve been mean to him and essentially invited his followers to send more. But first we have to “join together.” Change begins with us. Our “leaders” are supposed to be public servants, which means they work for us.

A practical first step might be to find out if there is a local initiative to promote regular non-partisan community discussion of controversial issues and follow-up discussion in small groups made up of people of different political persuasions to explore the issues in greater depth.

If no such local initiative exists, then we have to take the initiative ourselves. This could begin by getting together for an initial conversation with a friend or acquaintance who is of a different political persuasion, then for each of us to invite one other person we know to join, and then to build out from there.

Once we become comfortable with such conversations, we could expand the group to include different racial, religious, gender, class, or other perspectives. But I would think that the small groups should be no larger than 8-10 people to be workable and achieve the desired goal.

The participants in such face-to-face conversations would have to agree to certain foundational commitments or it won’t work. These include commitments to:

Respectful and civil dialogue
An honest search for facts and truth
Sharing with each other the fundamental beliefs and values informing our position on any particular issue
Listening to one another in a spirit of trying to understand opposing points of view
Openness to changing our mind in light of new information, insights, or understandings.

As Benjamin Franklin said, we have a Republic—if we can keep it. So, it is on us to keep it. We will probably still end up disagreeing on this, that or the other issue. But we will no longer demonize those with whom we disagree. Instead we will humanize one another, and we just might end up keeping the Republic that has been handed on to us in sacred trust.

My thinking on all this has been significantly influenced by Anthony Kronman’s account of political statesmanship in chapter 2 of his 1993 book “The Lost Lawyer: Failing Ideals of the Legal Profession” with its emphasis on the preservation of “political fraternity” as foundational to the ongoing viability of our polity:

https://www.amazon.com/Lost-Lawyer-Failing-Ideals-Profession/dp/0674539273

Thoughts?

Anonymous 2noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7846189835239594160.post-41813824091684807952018-10-26T20:47:25.658-04:002018-10-26T20:47:25.658-04:00Equating being rude to people in a restaurant (whi...Equating being rude to people in a restaurant (which I disagree with) and mailing them bombs is pretty sick.
Why can’t a Catholic priest simply say this is wrong instead of making excuses?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7846189835239594160.post-47669764187429469742018-10-26T20:00:31.905-04:002018-10-26T20:00:31.905-04:00Still not Kavanaugh (but I think you are)
