The aircraft is still in product...Anon, rest easy. The aircraft is still in production near Marietta, GA and is as solid as a rock. The old ones are maintained down to the metal, even microscopic cracks. You are safer in one of them at 20,000 feet that in your own living room. BUt there are a lot of moving parts and people mistake the reliability as being inate and and not maintained. So budgets are cut and maintenance deferred until such as this happens. In other words, it is exactly like our Faith. Nutured every day it will last forever. I have not read<br />anything yet that told how old the plane that went down was. The C-130 is a marvelous and reliable aircraft that has suffered from neglect the last few years.
