At no point in the celebration of Mass in either form is there any mention of the first Sunday after Easter being connected to Sr Faustina's "revelations".

There is nothing wrong with private devotions but elevation of these into a cult is dangerous. JP II may have been convinced of the sanctity of his countrywoman to the extent of canonizing her (far too soon, given that her writings were regarded as heretical as recently as 1959) but what convinces me that the whole business is suspect is that all the "divine mercy" pictures are unadulterated kitsch, and the sentimental warbling of the "chaplet" on EWTN and other venues is a complete turn-off.

We are a grown-up Church with a grown-up liturgy (at least before V2 got its hands on it) and the sooner people realize this, the better. Even as a small child, pre-V2 sentimental piety repelled me, and I don't think I was that precocious.John Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09027156691859606002noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7846189835239594160.post-31875597345883034522013-11-13T00:50:11.301-05:002013-11-13T00:50:11.301-05:00I read the "Divine Mercy in My Soul" som...I read the "Divine Mercy in My Soul" some years back out of curiosity. It made a deep impression on me at the time. I was rather stunned to learn that St. Faustina had so little formal education (as did some other similar saints such as Catherine of Siena).
At one point in his life, Padre Pio
was banned from hearing confessions and saying Mass.
Pope Pius XI reversed the ban, saying that he had been badly informed about the Padre. These things happen.
No one has to accept the private revelations of St Faustina, that is true. It should be noted that she did prophesize the suppression of her writings.Georgenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7846189835239594160.post-58089399130951855582013-11-12T21:16:25.499-05:002013-11-12T21:16:25.499-05:00John, Blessed John Paul II was a native Polish spe...John, Blessed John Paul II was a native Polish speaker, unlike Blessed John XXIII. So the former was able to go back to the original Polish, unlike the latter, who relied on faulty translations.

Of course, no Catholic is required to accept any private revelation, but you are required to accept St. Faustina Kowalska as a canonized saint of the Church.Militia Immaculatahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15021417068774633653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7846189835239594160.post-59580579123499583382013-11-12T10:48:22.072-05:002013-11-12T10:48:22.072-05:00Actually, there is no Feast of "the Divine Me...Actually, there is no Feast of "the Divine Mercy". The first Sunday after Easter was indeed designated as "Divine Mercy Sunday" by JP II, but that is akin to Sundays being designated as "Mission Sunday" or "Youth Sunday". It is known as "Low Sunday" or "Quasimodo Sunday" and in the traditional Roman calendar is "Missa in Albis (Depositis)" because in the early Church the neophytes discarded their white baptismal garments on this day.

There are other problems. Sr Faustina Kowalska's private revelations are not authenticated, despite the fact that Bl.JP II canonized her (he canonized everyone, it seems, with the possible exception of the Vatican cat). However, they had powerful backing in Poland. In 1959 Bl.John XXIII placed her writings and those of her clerical supporters on the Index. This was the first year of his pontificate, so it cannot be assumed that he was a dotard who automatically signed everything that Cardinal Ottaviani put in front of him.

Since both he and Bl.JP II are to be canonized next year, one who considered her writings as bordering on the heretical, and another who believed her private revelations to be so compellingly authentic as to wish to impose them on the whole Church, there is obvious cause for confusion.

Since there is no separate Mass and Office on this day, I reserve the right not to buy into this particular cult.John Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09027156691859606002noreply@blogger.com
