A mountain is that natural physical structure which juts up toward the sky, toward the firmament representing Heaven. The summit of the mountain symbolizes the Heavenly reality which is above all that is earthly and worldly. The mountaintop is experienced as a place of solitude situated well above mundane, weary, hectic and often contentious life below and where one can be in a more amenable place to pray to and converse with God. At the top of the mountain, the Divine reality of who Christ is was manifested to Peter, James, and John. What was revealed to the disciples, and what they would come to more fully understand according to the Holy Spirit, is that Jesus is God and one of the Persons of the Trinity, of which the other Persons were also there present."He was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and His garments became white as snow." God does not hide His Holy truth from us and so what was manifested to the disciples on the mountain top is that which is conveyed to us through His Scripture. As is written in Daniel 7, "and the Ancient of Days took his throne His clothing was white as snow, the hair on his head like pure wool; His throne was flames of fire". Christ who "shone like the sun" at the Transfiguration, and displayed His glory and radiance, revealed to us that He is the Divine Sun emanating with the light and Fire of the Holy Spirit whose help is so necessary for our spiritual health and existence.
Moses and Elias, representing the Law and the Prophets, were also there on the mountain. Christ, through His Death and Resurrection, would fulfill what all those who obeyed His Holy law and who came before Him had foretold and hoped for. He would come forth from the the darkness of the tomb at His Resurrection, the Eternal Sun rising in splendor on that resplendent morn in the New Day of Salvation. The light of the Eternal Sun would come forth in magnificent radiance on that Glorious morn of the New Day of Salvation. And so Christ came forth- the Divine Light, in triumph over the darkness of sin and death. He came forth, just as at the beginning Creation came forth, to fill the void of darkness. The light of created things brought illumination to dispel the darkness that was there. "All things came to be through Him and without Him nothing came to be. What came through Him was life and this life was the light of the human race. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it".
Christ is the Light of the world, the Divine light whose light shows to us what is sinful and evil. The Light of Christ enlightens us to His Divine Truth. He is the light by which is illuminated that which we should avoid, and that light which shows us what path we are to take. Now the path we are to take is to ascend the mountain of holiness which can only be done with the help of God who will reward a a sincere desire dedicated effort to do so. For most, though, it will not be attainable in this life but will have to await the ascent to Heaven in purgatory.Georgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05809499822558662728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7846189835239594160.post-12068061840289566632017-08-06T12:21:35.340-04:002017-08-06T12:21:35.340-04:00Interesting that the Introit 'Illuxerunt' ...Interesting that the Introit 'Illuxerunt' is not in the 1974 Graduale. Usually the monks of Solesmes redistributed the chants to fit the Novus Ordo, but in this case the OF Introit is 'Tibi dixit cor meum' which belongs to the second Sunday of Lent. The OF Missal Antiphon is different altogether, although it's not supposed to be sung.

Having had relative stasis for 1500 years, liturgically speaking, the Roman Rite was subjected to innovations which began in the 1950s and reached their apogee in the 1960s wherein the Rite was declared to have been destroyed.

Only it wasn't, and could not have been - hence Summorum Pontificum whose tenth anniversary we now celebrate. Laus Deo!

John Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09027156691859606002noreply@blogger.com
