RUPNICK’S ART APPEARS ON THE WEBPAGE OF VATICAN NEWS ON SUNDAY AND ON MONDAY THE HOLY SEE’S WEBSITE ANNOUNCES RUPNICK’S ECCLESIASTICAL TRIAL

Is there mischief at Vatican News?

Revised screenshot for the same story on Monday!

Press Release of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, 13.10.2025

On 9 October 2025, the five Judges of the Tribunal that will hear the case of Reverend Marko Ivan Rupnik were appointed.

The panel of judges is composed of women and clerics who are not members of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and do not hold any office in the Dicasteries of the Roman Curia.

This is to better guarantee, as in any judicial process, the autonomy and independence of the aforementioned Tribunal.

So does this message signify a call for mercy, a miracle or thank you?

We know that Paolo Ruffini has drawn criticism for initially defending the Vatican's use of Rupnik's art on its website and social media.
During a conference in June 2024, Ruffini suggested that removing the artwork was "not a Christian response" and was insensitive to the victims.
He also appeared to downplay the allegations against Rupnik, noting they did not involve minors, and claimed that judging the artist before a verdict was premature.
Following widespread backlash from abuse survivors and Church leaders, the Vatican began removing the artwork from its online platforms.
I am wondering if this was the middle finger to those who want Rupnick’s art removed everywhere and him defrocked.

The usual standard process for any allegation is suspension during the investigatory period. Suspension is a neutral act rather than a determination of guilt.

Remember--the Dicastery for Communications has the highest budget in the Vatican by far. Money well spent, right?

I’m conflicted about whether an abuser’s artwork should be removed and maybe there’s a difference if they or their victims are alive.

Eric Gill carved the stations of the cross for Westminster Cathedral as well as the entrance to the BBC etc. He abused his own sister among others but I’d hate to see these tremendous artworks removed. I like to think his art is the atonement for his sins.
